The five domains

Where dependency tends to collect.

01
Team & Role Clarity
Whether roles were designed or accumulated, and what happens to work that fits no one's description.
02
Systems & Reporting
Where the work actually lives, and whether information arrives on its own or has to be chased.
03
Governance & Escalation
Whether there's a line between what needs the principal and what doesn't, and whether it holds.
04
Major Initiatives
Who runs point on the big things, and whether a stall would surface before it became a problem.
05
Office Operations
Vendor selection, financial reporting, and how the operational side of a deal gets reviewed.

The Principal Dependency Assessment

Answer as things stand today, not as you'd like them to be. There are no wrong answers, only an accurate starting point.

Are you completing this for your own family office, or on behalf of a client?

The questions are worded slightly differently depending on your answer.

What the assessment measures

A lower score is the better score.

This is a measure of dependency, not performance, so the scale runs the opposite way to most scores. It counts how many decisions still route through the principal instead of resolving on their own. The fewer there are, the lower the number.

A 0 means the office runs on structure and almost nothing needs the principal to move. A 10 means it runs on one person. Scoring a 2 is a good result. Scoring an 8 is the problem worth solving.

Most family offices I see aren't badly run. They're run by one person who has become the resolution point for everything the structure doesn't cover. That's what this measures, and it isn't a grade.

Reading the scale
Effective · 0.0 – 2.4
Most of what could run without the principal already does.
Room to Grow · 2.5 – 4.9
Mostly holding, with a few things still coming back to one person.
Elevated Dependency · 5.0 – 7.4
Past the midpoint. It works, but it works because one person is available.
Cause for Concern · 7.5 – 10.0
The office is running on attention rather than structure.
A 0 means the office runs on structure. A 10 means it runs on one person.
